Personal Archive of Christy Brown Purchased in London This Week by National Library and Little Museum of Dublin

Ballymaloe Cine Club announces the second film in the new series that combines casual, quality Ballymaloe food with a quality film. My Left Foot (Ireland, 1989), the biopic of Irish writer and cerebral palsy sufferer Christy Brown, will be shown at 8pm on Friday 11 April in Ballymaloe Grainstore, Shanagarry, Co. Cork.

A blackboard menu of soup, sandwiches, charcuterie or cheese boards will be served in The Grainstore from 7pm. The room will be set up cabaret style, making for a convivial evening. When the lights dim at 8pm, film buffs need only hitch their chairs around to watch My Left Foot on a big, 4x6 meter screen.

Christy Brown died in 1981, but he has been in the news again this week, as his archive was purchased by the National Library and the Little Museum of Dublin at auction on 19 March. Unseen photographs, sketches, poetry, books and personal effects were amongst the lot auctioned at Bonhams, London. Thankfully, the archive will remain in Ireland.

My Left Foot, from director Jim Sheridan, was a huge international hit in 1989. It launched the career of Daniel Day-Lewis for his performance as Brown, who broke through the barricades erected by his body and discovered a wondrous means of expression through his left foot - the only part of his body he could control.

Brown was born into a family of 23 children of whom only 13 survived. He overcame astonishing odds to become an internationally recognised writer and painter.

Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for Best Actor for a masterful performance that captures Brown's anger and artistry, his bellowing frustration and intense faith. Brenda Fricker, who plays Brown's indomitable mother, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also stars Fiona Shaw and Adrian Dunbar.
